What to pack,
layer by layer
From rainforest heat to a -15°C summit night, Kilimanjaro is five climates in one week. This is the list our crews check before every climb — nothing more, nothing missing.
§ 1 On your body
- Broken-in, waterproof trekking boots — the one item you cannot compromise on
- Merino or synthetic base layers, top and bottom (never cotton)
- Fleece or softshell mid layer
- Insulated down jacket for camp and summit night
- Waterproof shell jacket and trousers
- Trekking trousers and shorts
- Warm hat, sun hat and buff or neck gaiter
- Liner gloves plus insulated summit mittens
- Quality sunglasses with high UV protection
- 4–5 pairs of trekking socks plus one thick summit pair
§ 2 In your daypack (you carry it)
- 25–35 litre daypack with rain cover
- 3 litres of water capacity — bottles or bladder with an insulated hose
- Headlamp with spare batteries — essential for summit night
- High-SPF sunscreen and lip balm
- Snacks you actually love — morale is calories
- Camera or phone with a power bank kept warm in a pocket
§ 3 In your duffel (your porter carries it, max ±15 kg)
- Four-season sleeping bag, rated -10°C or colder
- Inflatable sleeping mat if you want extra comfort over the foam one provided
- Camp shoes or trainers for the evenings
- Toiletries, quick-dry towel and wet wipes
- Personal first-aid kit and any prescribed medication
- Trekking poles — your knees will thank you on the descent
- A book, cards, and dry bags to keep everything organised
