What to pack,
layer by layer

From rainforest heat to a -15°C summit night, Kilimanjaro is five climates in one week. This is the list our crews check before every climb — nothing more, nothing missing.

§ 1 On your body
  • Broken-in, waterproof trekking boots — the one item you cannot compromise on
  • Merino or synthetic base layers, top and bottom (never cotton)
  • Fleece or softshell mid layer
  • Insulated down jacket for camp and summit night
  • Waterproof shell jacket and trousers
  • Trekking trousers and shorts
  • Warm hat, sun hat and buff or neck gaiter
  • Liner gloves plus insulated summit mittens
  • Quality sunglasses with high UV protection
  • 4–5 pairs of trekking socks plus one thick summit pair
§ 2 In your daypack (you carry it)
  • 25–35 litre daypack with rain cover
  • 3 litres of water capacity — bottles or bladder with an insulated hose
  • Headlamp with spare batteries — essential for summit night
  • High-SPF sunscreen and lip balm
  • Snacks you actually love — morale is calories
  • Camera or phone with a power bank kept warm in a pocket
§ 3 In your duffel (your porter carries it, max ±15 kg)
  • Four-season sleeping bag, rated -10°C or colder
  • Inflatable sleeping mat if you want extra comfort over the foam one provided
  • Camp shoes or trainers for the evenings
  • Toiletries, quick-dry towel and wet wipes
  • Personal first-aid kit and any prescribed medication
  • Trekking poles — your knees will thank you on the descent
  • A book, cards, and dry bags to keep everything organised
